Caregivers handbook
The Caregiver Kete is our practical handbook to support carers. It is a resource to help caregivers create a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for those in care:
The kete offers advice on:
- the caregiving role and responsibilities
- where to get support
- meeting care standards
- ways to access financial or emotional support
- how to manage everyday care
- how to maintain the wellbeing, identity, and connections of those in care.
Learning opportunities
Learning opportunities are a significant part of the support we provide caregiving whānau.
These opportunities support caregivers to meet the needs of tamariki and rangatahi in their care. They also help carer to keep themselves well as a caregiving whānau.
Caregiver social workers help caregiving whānau identify and take part in learning opportunities as part of their support plan.
National care standards
The National Care Standards are set by legislation. They detail what every child or young person who receives care is entitled to, what should be provided and by whom.
They also set out the support caregivers can expect to receive. Such as our provision of an assessment and support plan, and our support of tamariki during care transitions.
They also set out a child-friendly Statement of Rights. These ensure all those in care understand what they’re entitled to and how to speak up or make a complaint.

National Care Standards
By implementing the National Care Standards, we’ll lift the quality of care for tamariki and rangatahi, and offer better support to our caregivers.

Child statement of rights
We talked to rangatahi in care about what is important to them and what they needed, which helped us create the National Care Standards. These explain what your rights are when you are in care. Rights are things you should have to live a good life.
